Judges 6:36 – Then Gideon said to God, “In Order to see whether you will deliver Israel by my hand, as you have said”.
Seems to me there is a huge problem here in this verse. If I think I am hearing Gideon’s tone right he is in essence testing God. I.E. “In order for me to believe you, you need to do this to prove it”. Which is all well and fine, but if I remember correctly (which I do) Deut. 6:16 says “Do not put the Lord your God to the test, as you tested him at Massah.” So I am a little unclear as to why Gideon’s testing is looked over by God, or at least the text makes no indication that God was angry and in fact God does all of the tests that Gideon asks, that’s right multiple tests. I don’t have a lot to say on the matter, but it just struck me as very odd that Gideon’s request goes unheeded in terms of what Deut. 6 says. Is this an inconsistency or is there a practical reason for this that can be deduced from further reading?
